Who will I use as my photography models?
I plan on using some of my friends who are also currently in or have been a part of creative subjects as they will have had experience with photography and being directed into different poses and outfits for coursework. Most of my friends are very different with a wide variety of body types, gender identities, and fashion senses so having a range of different styles to play with makes my magazine inclusive and representative of most people. Having that variety means that anyone reading the magazine will feel seen instead of the standard of the industry being white, size 0 women, or highly muscular and toned men.
What thought needs to be given to the following aspects of mise-en-scene?
Location: The first and second edition of this magazine will be released in January and February so if I were to use an outside location, I wouldn't be able to take photos soon as August and September have recently been scorching hot and cloudless, nothing like British winter so I will be using both a mix of studio shots and outside shots, though the outside shots will have to wait until a little bit later in the year.
Costume: For a fashion and style magazine, I will be asking my models to wear an outfit that is both stylish, fitting the vibe of a high-end magazine, and in their own style. Showing off a person's own personal style is important to address how oversimplistic fashion isn't for everyone. The magazine is meant to demonstrate a love of fashion by everyone and a variety of genres.
Props: I don't particularly need any props however, for a New Years style photoshoot, I may need a few paper plates, party hats, some decoration for the background etc. I want the focus to be mainly on the fashion elements of my models and what they are wearing.
Body Language: Confidence is key in a photoshoot like this, celebrities and models know they are viewed and admired by thousands, if not millions, so my models will have to radiate that same confident energy in the photoshoot. I want my models to feel comfortable in whatever they wear as this magazine is all about.
Lighting: I want most of the lighting to be natural but if shots need to be done in studio, the lighting should try and match any background that is greenscreened in.
Who will be taking the photos?
I will, I prefer to be the person behind the camera making the decisions and directing the people modelling for me as I often feel very self conscious about my body and appearence as a trans man. While the magazine itself is intended to show a crowd that any style and anybody is perfect the way it is, I want my models to be confident in themselves and confident in whatever they're wearing.
